SAGINAW — A 38-year-old Saginaw man charged this morning in connection with a machete attack against his neighbor also is a candidate for the Saginaw City Council.

Christopher M. Kaczmarek, 1542 Gilbert, is one of nine people seeking five seats on the City Council, according to Saginaw City Clerk Diane M. Herman.

Kaczmarek also was arraigned this morning in Saginaw County District Court on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

If convicted, he would face up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors allege he attacked a neighbor with a machete Aug. 12 following a disagreement.

Saginaw County District Judge Christopher S. Boyd set bond at $20,000 cash or surety, and Kaczmarek remained in the Saginaw County Jail this morning in lieu of posting bond.

He awaits a hearing on the evidence, the date of which wasn't immediately known.

Saginaw Police Department officers, along with officers on the Saginaw Emergency Services Team, executed a search and arrest warrant at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at Kaczmarek's home on the city's southwest side, according to Saginaw Police Department Detective Sgt. Joseph Dutoi.

Herman said workers with the City Clerk's office are still in the process of certifying candidates before their names can be placed on the Nov. 8 ballot. Kaczmarek and most other City Council candidates haven't been certified yet after filing their nominating petitions by the Aug. 16 deadline, though Herman expects to certification process to be completed by Monday.

Kaczmarek in 1994 pleaded guilty to attempted breaking and entering a vehicle to steal property worth more than $500, a misdemeanor, and in 2009 pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated-third offense, a felony. He served one year under house arrest for the drunken driving charge and had remained on probation since.
